Taiwanese Tzu Chi volunteers provide aid in Nepal after devastating landslide

Tzu Chi volunteers in Nepal are actively engaged in providing critical support following a devastating landslide that occurred on the China-Nepal border on August 26. The disaster prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving 15,000 military and police personnel. Tzu Chi volunteers have joined relief efforts, delivering not only clean water and food but also crucial protective supplies to frontline responders.

In one instance, Bikash, a Tzu Chi volunteer, delivered 25 blankets, 500 bottles of mineral water, and over 900 packs of instant noodles and biscuits to Galchhi in Dhading District, where approximately 100 households were in need. The distribution of clean drinking water brought visible relief and smiles to residents facing extreme scarcity.

Compounding the disaster, floods have washed deceased individuals downstream for hundreds of kilometers, creating a public health concern due to the stench of decomposition. Recognizing the strain on medical facilities and the dangerous conditions faced by personnel handling the bodies, Tzu Chi volunteers urgently mobilized 120 sets of protective clothing, 20 boxes of masks, and 20 boxes of medical gloves from Kathmandu to Chitwan District. This aid is intended for hospital staff and first responders tasked with the sensitive and challenging work of managing the deceased.

Tzu Chi Foundation stated its commitment to supporting affected residents through tangible actions, aiming to provide comfort and warmth from afar as communities begin the arduous process of recovery and rebuilding. The volunteers' efforts highlight a compassionate response to a crisis marked by loss of life and severe infrastructure damage.
