Tanga police launch investigation into journalist's abduction

Tanga Regional Police have initiated a thorough investigation into the alleged abduction, assault, and robbery of a local freelance journalist. Kazungu Bakari, a resident of Makorora in Tanga, reported being attacked on August 4, 2026.

According to Bakari's account, three unidentified individuals ambushed him around 9:00 AM in the Mabawa area of Msambweni Ward. He claims they forced him into a vehicle, the make and license plate of which he could not identify, and drove him to an unknown location. There, he alleges he was interrogated and beaten with sticks, sustaining injuries.

During the incident, Bakari reported that his work equipment and personal belongings were stolen. This included a mobile phone, a Wi-Fi router, and an iPad/Microsoft laptop, with the total value estimated at approximately 1.2 million Tanzanian shillings (about $500 USD).

The Tanga Regional Police Commander, Almachius Mchunguzi, stated that the police began investigating the case after receiving a report from the Mabawa Ward Chairman on the day of the incident. The investigation's primary goals are to uncover the facts, identify those responsible, and determine their motives to ensure appropriate legal measures are taken.
