Tangerang Landfill Fire Emergency Response Ends, Mitigation Efforts Continue

The emergency response status for the fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang, Indonesia, has officially concluded. While the immediate emergency phase is over, authorities are maintaining vigilance to prevent further incidents.

The emergency status, declared via a Bupati Decree, was in effect from July 1 to July 14, following a significant fire that consumed approximately 15 hectares of the landfill. Although the emergency declaration has ended, the handling of the incident is moving into a transitional phase. The primary goal is to implement mitigation strategies to avert similar fires in the future.

For the emergency status, I just received input from the Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Environment, today is the last day, tomorrow it can probably be revoked. But with the condition that mitigation continues to be carried out.

Bupati Tangerang Maesyal Rasyid stated that efforts to manage the situation continue. These include ongoing cooling of the burnt areas, construction of water reservoirs and towers within the landfill, provision of water pumps, development of dedicated access routes for fire trucks, and the use of thermal drones to detect hot spots. The task force established during the emergency period will be retained to address potential new fires during the anticipated long dry season.

In addition to fire prevention, the Tangerang Regency government is ensuring the health of residents living near the landfill. The Health Office is monitoring their condition, particularly concerning the effects of smoke inhalation from the previous fire. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure the safety and well-being of the community surrounding the Jatiwaringin landfill.
