Tanker off Oman reports explosion near vessel; crew safe

The master of a tanker located off the coast of Oman has reported hearing an explosion in proximity to the vessel, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre. Fortunately, the tanker and its entire crew are reported to be safe following the incident. The UKMTO stated that the explosion occurred approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) northeast of Khasab, a coastal city in Oman.

In response to the report, the UKMTO has advised vessels transiting the area to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activities they may encounter. This advisory comes at a time of increased maritime security concerns in the region. The incident also occurs shortly after Iran announced it was nearing a deal with Oman regarding a new route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei informed state television that an agreement with Oman, which borders the Strait of Hormuz, was close to being finalized. However, he emphasized that such an arrangement would not signify the reopening of the strait itself. This development adds another layer of complexity to the maritime situation, as the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil transportation.
