Tanzanian youth urged to use technology and innovation to create jobs

Tanzanian youth should use technology and innovation to create their own jobs and help build a $1 trillion economy by 2050, speakers told an innovation conference in Dar es Salaam.

The call came from Sarah Majengo, founder of Fanisi Institute, during a presentation at the conference, which brought together young people and other stakeholders to discuss opportunities and the role of youth in implementing Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.

Majengo said technological progress, including artificial intelligence, should not be viewed only as a threat to employment. She urged young people to use it to learn, improve their skills, launch economic activities and develop new sources of income.

“Young people should not think only about being employed. They should create employment for themselves and innovate without fear,” she said. Through its training, Fanisi teaches participants self-awareness, confidence and ways to pursue their ambitions.

The discussions focused on the theme “Encouraging Youth to Seize Opportunities Toward Vision 2050.” Participants examined questions including where young people fit in and how they can take an active role in the country’s future. Opportunities identified at the conference included mining, tourism, agriculture, the digital economy, production, industry and infrastructure.

Henry Nkya, founder of Believe Games, said youth participation in economic activity was important because young people make up a major part of the workforce. Farha Mohamed, head of products at Selcom Tanzania, encouraged young people to set clear goals and pursue them with effort, discipline, patience and determination.
