Taoiseach to hold talks with German chancellor in Dublin

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin is set to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Dublin for discussions on key European Union challenges. The meeting, occurring during Ireland's six-month presidency of the EU Council, will prioritize significant issues facing the bloc.

A primary focus will be the ongoing disagreement among member states regarding the size of the EU's long-term budget. Germany is among several nations advocating for a reduced spending plan compared to the proposed two trillion euro package.

Martin also plans to convey Ireland's solidarity with those affected by the recent attack at the Berlin Pride festival. The attack, which claimed one life and injured at least 29 others, involved a van being driven into a crowd, followed by the assailant using a machete. The suspect, identified as Abdul Ballout, was shot dead by police on Sunday.

The European Union is a community of values, chief among them respect for human dignity and equality and the rights of minorities. What happened in Berlin goes against everything that we stand for and we must never accept, normalise or tolerate it.

He emphasized that the EU stands for values like respect for human dignity and equality, and that such acts must never be accepted or normalized.

Discussions will also cover strengthening Europe's competitiveness, simplifying regulations, deepening the single market, expanding trade links, addressing energy costs, and preparing for climate and digital transitions. Enlargement of the EU is another priority for the Irish presidency, and Martin intends to discuss progress with Chancellor Merz.
