Tasmania's 'Hermès of Cherries' Hit Record AU$70 Million in Exports, Taiwan Among Top Buyers

Tasmania's renowned cherries, often dubbed the "Hermès of cherries," have once again demonstrated their premium status on the global stage, achieving a record export value of AU$70 million for the 2025/26 season. This outstanding performance, with exports surging by over 30% to 2,740 tons, underscores the enduring appeal and quality of Tasmanian produce. The strong demand from key Asian markets—Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Vietnam—which collectively account for 70% of total exports, highlights the strategic importance of these regions for Tasmanian agriculture.

Peter Cornish, CEO of the Tasmanian Fruitgrowers Association, noted the challenging start to the season, with cooler spring and early summer conditions delaying fruit maturation and harvest. However, the favorable timing of the Lunar New Year and the exceptional quality of the fruit allowed for a successful sales period. The reduced competition from Southern Hemisphere rivals in February further benefited Tasmanian exporters, enabling them to capitalize on market opportunities.

Nic Hansen, owner of a Tasmanian cherry orchard and chairman of the Fruitgrowers Association, expressed deep satisfaction with the sales results. He emphasized that Tasmanian cherries constitute 61% of the nation's total cherry export value, a clear indicator of the industry's strength and significance. This success not only sets a new benchmark but also significantly bolsters the confidence of Tasmanian cherry farmers, who remain committed to maintaining their competitive edge amidst high operational costs.
