Taufiq Confident Malaysia Will Improve at Aichi-Nagoya Games

Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari believes the country can improve its showing at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, citing thorough preparation and the commitment of athletes and sports associations.

Taufiq said Malaysia’s medal ambitions would need to reflect discussions with the relevant sports associations and an assessment of their capabilities. The official target will be announced on Sept. 8, during a ceremony to hand the Jalur Gemilang to national contingent chief Datuk Wira Mohd Sumali Reduan and the athletes.

God willing, I am confident there will be an improvement, and our preparations have been very strong.

This time, the target will be presented by medal color, following the approach used for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Malaysia returned from that event with eight gold, three silver and five bronze medals, exceeding its initial target of five golds.

At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Malaysia won six gold, eight silver and 18 bronze medals, placing 14th overall. Taufiq said the goal would be achieved through a shared commitment among the country’s sports bodies and athletes.
