Tebet: Bolsonaro experienced far-right ideology's harshness firsthand

Simone Tebet, a pre-candidate for the Senate in São Paulo, described her political positioning as center-right on economic matters and center-left on social issues. She asserted that the defense of minorities and the increased participation of women in politics are fundamental to democracy, criticizing what she views as a selective approach by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro.

Tebet suggested that Bolsonaro has personally experienced the negative consequences of the far-right ideology she represents, referencing recent familial disputes involving Bolsonaro's stepsons, particularly presidential hopeful Flávio Bolsonaro. This marks Tebet's first foray into elections outside her home state of Mato Grosso do Sul and the MDB party, as she aligns with President Lula's party after a previous presidential run.

Having served as Lula's Minister of Planning until April, Tebet left the position to pursue the Senate seat in São Paulo at the president's request. Her decision to change her electoral domicile was influenced by the significant portion of votes she received in São Paulo during the 2022 presidential election. Tebet also addressed criticisms regarding her candidacy not originating from São Paulo, comparing the situation to Governor Tarcísio de Freitas's own electoral background and highlighting her long-standing ties to the state through her family and past campaign.

Discussing her adaptation to São Paulo's political environment, Tebet drew parallels between the state's interior, particularly the northwest region, and her home state of Mato Grosso do Sul. She noted the shared reliance on agribusiness and the similar weight given to local issues over national ones. Tebet expressed confidence in her ability to navigate São Paulo's political landscape, citing her extensive experience during her 2022 presidential campaign.
