Temperatures up to 36°C and downpours: weather forecast for DR

The Dominican Republic is bracing for intense heat, with temperatures expected to soar up to 36°C, alongside significant rainfall and thunderstorms. The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) forecasts that a tropical wave, easterly winds, and daytime heating will dominate the weather conditions, bringing humidity and a hot environment.

Morning hours may see increased cloudiness with isolated showers, particularly along the northeast coast. However, the afternoon is predicted to bring heavier downpours, electrical storms, and gusty winds. These conditions are expected to affect provinces including Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, La Vega, Santiago, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, Dajabón, and Santiago Rodríguez, as well as northern Santo Domingo, continuing into the early evening.

Indomet warns of elevated heat index values and recommends that people stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, and avoid direct sun exposure without protection. Children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the high temperatures. The institute also noted that minimum temperatures will range between 24°C and 26°C.

In a separate development, Indomet is monitoring a low-pressure system located hundreds of kilometers southwest of the Cape Verde islands. This system has a 70% probability of developing into a cyclone within the next 48 hours and a similar 70% chance over the next seven days. The forecast for Thursday includes the approach of another tropical wave, increasing moisture and instability, leading to more showers and storms across various provinces. Friday's outlook suggests local showers and isolated thunderstorms in southeastern, central, and border regions.
