Tempi Train Crash Trial: Defense Files Objections as Proceedings Continue in Greece

The trial stemming from the tragic train collision at Tempi, Greece, is proceeding with defense teams for the accused lodging formal objections. The court in Larissa is currently hearing arguments regarding the eligibility of various parties to participate as civil plaintiffs in the case.

Defense lawyers have specifically contested the right of the Hellenic Lawyers Association, the Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel, and the Greek state to be represented. They argue that the state's claim for damages is directed solely at four specific individuals. In contrast, no objections were raised by the accused against the victims' relatives and the injured who have declared their intention to participate in the trial.

In total, 36 individuals are accused in the case, encompassing current and former employees from Hellenic Railways (OSE), ERGOSE, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Hellenic Train, and the Railway Regulatory Authority. The majority face charges of dangerous interference with transport, potentially resulting in death, severe injury, and damage to public utility facilities. Three OSE officials also face charges of dereliction of duty.

During the proceedings, a moment of tension arose when relatives of victims reacted emotionally to a defense lawyer's presentation of their client's biography. The presiding judge warned that disruptive relatives would be removed from the courtroom. The next hearing on June 2 is scheduled to clarify the order in which the prosecutor and legal representatives will present their arguments on the objections.
