Ten Aspirants Eye Adjumani West Parliamentary Seat After MP's Death

Ten hopefuls are vying for the Adjumani West Constituency parliamentary seat in Uganda, a position left vacant by the passing of long-serving MP and former Defence Minister Gen Moses Ali. Ali died on July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, sparking a political race to succeed him.

Among those who have declared interest are former Adjumani District LCV chairpersons Ben Anyama, Nixon Owole, and James Leku Pilli, as well as former Moyo West County MP Santos Piro Eruaga. Daniel Izale, endorsed by the Patriotic League of Uganda, is also in the running, alongside Gasper Draga, Kassim Ali (son of Gen. Moses Ali), Justin Mawadri, Richard Madrara Obuni, and Patrick Tandrupasi.

The roadmap provides for the nomination of candidates, followed by the official campaign period before polling day.

Some aspirants have already begun engaging with voters through meetings and consultations, while others are expected to formally announce their candidacies. The Electoral Commission has set September 17, 2026, as the polling day for the by-election, outlining a roadmap that includes candidate nominations and an official campaign period. The commission has called for adherence to electoral laws and the maintenance of peace throughout the process.
