Ten Climbers Missing After Avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak

A group of ten international climbers has gone missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak, an 8,050-meter mountain in Pakistan's Karakoram range. Contact with the expedition team was lost on Thursday morning, prompting an immediate search operation assisted by helicopters, according to the Alpine Club Pakistan (ACP).

The missing climbers represent a diverse international contingent. Six climbers are from Nepal, one is from Pakistan, one is Chinese, one is from the USA, and one is from Oman. The expedition was led by Nirmal Purja, a highly acclaimed Nepali-born mountaineer known for his record-breaking ascent of all 14 eight-thousander peaks in just seven months in 2019. His achievement was documented in the Netflix production '14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible'.

Broad Peak, the twelfth-highest mountain globally, is situated on the border between Pakistan and China. This high-altitude region in northern Pakistan attracts numerous international mountaineering expeditions each year. The ACP is coordinating the ongoing search efforts for the missing team.
