Tenants' Association Demands Rent Reduction During Apartment Heatwaves

As Austria experiences intense heat, tenants' associations are demanding action to address overheating apartments. The Tenants' Association of Austria (Mietervereinigung Österreichs) has put forward three concrete proposals for changes to tenancy law, aiming to provide relief for residents struggling with high indoor temperatures.

The current situation leaves many tenants with few options to improve their living conditions. While a housing law amendment is reportedly under negotiation and announced by Housing Minister Andreas Babler (SPÖ), the Tenants' Association has proactively pushed for specific measures. These proposals aim to give tenants more recourse when their homes become uncomfortably hot.

One common issue highlighted is the reliance on portable air conditioning units, which often require external venting. The association's proposals are intended to address the difficulties tenants face in managing indoor temperatures, particularly when permanent solutions like split-system air conditioners are not permitted or feasible.

Georg Niedermühlbichler, President of the Tenants' Association, is advocating for these changes, which are designed to bring about improvements for tenants. The association believes that legislative adjustments are necessary to ensure that living spaces remain habitable during extreme weather conditions.
