Terengganu Cybercrime Records 980 Cases, RM21 Million in Losses

Terengganu has reported a significant rise in cybercrime, with 980 cases recorded in the first six months of 2026, leading to financial losses totaling RM20.94 million. This figure marks an increase of 48 cases compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, highlighting a growing trend in online criminal activity within the Malaysian state.

Cybercrime continues to be the primary driver of commercial crime in Terengganu. Overall, 1,009 commercial crime cases were recorded during the first half of the year, a rise from 955 cases in the same period last year. The total financial losses from all commercial crimes also increased from RM20.20 million to RM21.04 million, an increment of RM836,756.84.

However, the number of arrests for cybercrime cases decreased from 436 people to 393 people, a reduction of 43 arrests.

Despite the increase in cases and financial losses, the number of arrests for cybercrime cases saw a decrease. Police recorded 393 arrests for cybercrime, down from 436 arrests in the prior year. Similarly, the total number of arrests for all commercial crimes fell from 458 to 402.

Datuk Mohd. Khairi Khairudin, the Terengganu Police Chief, stated that the total losses from cybercrime alone increased by RM1.23 million compared to the previous year. He noted the decrease in arrests for both cybercrime and overall commercial crimes.
