Terrorist attack on Upper Swat police post foiled; officials cite rising violence

Authorities in Pakistan's Upper Swat district successfully thwarted a terrorist assault on the Chatkekal police post late Sunday night, according to District Police Officer (DPO) Mushtaq Ahmad. The coordinated attack saw more than a dozen terrorists surround the post near Jarogo Waterfall, initiating gunfire from multiple directions.

Personnel at the police post responded swiftly and effectively, engaging the attackers with heavy gunfire. This strong counter-response forced the militants to abandon their assault and flee the area. Initial reports indicate that at least two terrorists sustained injuries during the exchange of fire. Security forces have since heightened surveillance in the region as investigations continue to gather further details.

DPO Ahmad commended the bravery and prompt action of the officers stationed at the post, emphasizing that the Swat police remain committed to combating terrorism. "Such cowardly attacks cannot demoralize Swat Police. Our personnel know how to respond effectively to terrorist attacks," he stated.

The foiled attack occurs just one week after a devastating suicide bombing near the Kabal Police Station in Swat district, which claimed the lives of 17 people, including seven police officers. That blast occurred during a protest against lawlessness. Thousands had gathered days later to condemn the bombing and reaffirm their commitment to peace.

This incident underscores a broader trend of escalating terrorism and security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies indicates a significant increase in security personnel deaths in KP during July compared to June, alongside a sharp rise in overall terrorist fatalities. While civilian deaths saw a decrease, the overall security situation remains tense.
