Texas data center construction canceled amid water fears and community pressure

A proposed data center project in East Texas has been officially canceled following significant community opposition and growing regulatory concerns. Diode Ventures, the company behind the project, decided not to proceed with construction in Henderson County, near the Cedar Creek Reservoir.

The project had sparked widespread worry among local residents due to its potential to consume millions of gallons of water daily from the reservoir, a critical water source for the Fort Worth area. The proposed location, surrounded by hundreds of homes, also fueled resident concerns about the development's integration into an already established community.

Wendy Spivey, a Henderson County commissioner, noted that the residents' primary complaint was the project's placement within a developed community. She also highlighted concerns about the low water levels in the lake, attributed to regional drought conditions. Spivey acknowledged Diode Ventures' withdrawal as a positive step but cautioned that the land's owners are still seeking alternatives, and another developer might attempt to establish a data center on the site.

Governor Greg Abbott has taken a firmer stance on the expansion of such facilities in rural areas. He has called for new regulations to ensure data centers protect Texas's natural resources and infrastructure. Abbott stated that companies seeking to operate in Texas must meet clear standards, and this project did not. He emphasized the need for companies to prioritize communities, protect natural resources and the power grid, and respect residents' quality of life.
