Texas Senate Race: Governor Abbott Shares Prediction Market Data Favoring Paxton Over Talarico

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has publicly backed Attorney General Ken Paxton in his U.S. Senate bid, sharing a prediction market's projection that shows Paxton ahead of Democrat James Talarico. The general election is set for November 3 and is considered one of the most watched contests of the electoral cycle.

Abbott shared a graphic from the prediction market Kalshi on his official X account on July 24. The market gave Paxton a 56% chance of winning, compared to Talarico's 44%. Abbott commented, "Talarico the eccentric about to get toasted in Texas... all while national Democrats incinerate their money."

Kalshi allows participants to buy and sell contracts based on expected outcomes of events, including elections. The platform also provided other campaign indicators. Talarico had raised $68.6 million, while Paxton had $9.2 million. Talarico's contributions came 54% from small donors, versus 19% for Paxton.

Despite the prediction market's outlook, polls suggest a tighter race. As of July 27, Real Clear Polling's average showed Paxton with 45.2% of voter intention and Talarico with 44.6%, a difference of just 0.6 percentage points. The contest is classified as a "Toss Up."

Associated Press analysis highlights the race's competitiveness, noting its potential impact on the Senate's balance of power. Campaign finance reports show Talarico raised $21.5 million in the last period, while Paxton declared $7.5 million, giving the Democratic candidate a financial advantage at this stage.
