Texas Wildfire Engulfs 200 Square Kilometers, Continues to Burn

A wildfire in north-central Texas exploded in intensity, consuming over 200 square kilometers of ranchland in less than a day. Fueled by strong winds and extremely hot, dry weather, the blaze crossed creeks and rivers, according to residents.

"It just spread too fast," said Katy Rochelle, whose family's canoe rental business lost its office and workshop. She described the fire spreading "like a tornado." Her husband, a local firefighter, helped save their home, but she fears it could still be lost.

Multiple buildings were destroyed at the Worth Ranch youth camp, located on the southern edge of the fire. Fortunately, there were no campers or guests on the property, and all staff were safely evacuated, according to the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which owns the camp. Firefighters, with the help of water-dropping aircraft, worked to protect structures near the small town of Palo Pinto.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide resources to combat the fire. He also warned Texans to limit activities that could spark new fires during the dangerous weather conditions. Fire crews were also battling four smaller wildfires in surrounding Texas counties.

Wildfires have flared up across the South and West in recent days due to persistent dry weather. The National Interagency Fire Center reported over 50,000 wildfires across the U.S. so far this year, the highest in a decade. The weather service warned of a high risk of rapid fire spread in Southern California, north of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, firefighters in Nevada made significant progress in slowing a fire that forced thousands to evacuate the city of Reno over the weekend, destroying 47 homes.
