Thai noodle packages hide marijuana in Kaohsiung drug bust

Kaohsiung police have busted an international drug trafficking operation that used a clever disguise: popular Thai instant noodles. The criminal group attempted to smuggle a significant quantity of marijuana into Taiwan by concealing it within the familiar packaging of the popular snack.

The operation involved hiding 2,519 grams of marijuana buds inside 24 packages of Thai noodles. The drug was mixed with broken noodles and seasoning to mimic the appearance of the actual product before being resealed. The illicit cargo was then sent to Taiwan via international parcel service, an attempt to evade detection by authorities.

A specialized task force, comprising officers from the Ministry of Finance's Customs Administration, the 3rd Special Police Corps, and the Kaohsiung City Criminal Investigation Division, collaborated to crack the case. They arrested a 31-year-old Vietnamese migrant worker, identified only as Ding, who was collecting the package in Alian District, Kaohsiung.

Ding was reportedly using his work address for delivery and a phone number belonging to a 23-year-old friend, identified as Chen, who was overstaying his visa. Ding initially attempted to shift blame to Chen, claiming he was instructed to receive the package. However, police saw through the deception. The seized marijuana has an estimated street value of NT$3.5 million (approximately $110,000 USD). Ding has been detained pending further investigation, with authorities working to identify his contacts in Thailand.
