Thailand Extends High Security Alert to Songkhla, Satun After Southern Violence Surge

Thailand has escalated its security readiness, extending heightened alert measures to the provinces of Songkhla and Satun. This decision follows a surge of 77 violent incidents that have shaken Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala in the southern border region over a three-day period since Saturday night.

The directive to increase vigilance to the highest level encompasses the governors of five provinces. Thai authorities are concerned about the potential spillover of violence into other areas, particularly those sharing a border with Malaysia. The governors of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Songkhla, and Satun have been instructed to tighten controls in high-risk zones, implement continuous 24-hour security monitoring, and bolster proactive intelligence operations.

According to a spokesperson for the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 (ISOC 4), these measures are crucial to prevent the unrest that began on Saturday from spreading to Songkhla and Satun. The spokesperson noted that both Satun and Songkhla provinces border the Malaysian states of Kedah and Perlis, making them potential targets for armed groups seeking to destabilize the region.

Authorities in the affected five provinces are also directed to closely integrate operations with all relevant sectors to mitigate the worsening of the situation. Specific actions are being implemented to prevent further incidents, especially in identified high-risk areas, aiming to restore stability in the southern border provinces.
