Thailand's women's volleyball team receives dire news amid 'relegation battle'

The Thai women's national volleyball team has received grim news ahead of the FIVB Nations League (VNL) as three of its top stars are sidelined with injuries. Chatchu-on Moksri, Hattaya Bamrungsuk, and Wipavee Srithong have sustained significant injuries and are expected to miss the initial two weeks of the prestigious tournament, which begins in early June.

This setback comes at a critical time for Thailand, as the VNL has implemented a relegation system. Last season, the team narrowly escaped dropping to a lower division, finishing just one spot above South Korea due to superior set difference. Both Thailand and South Korea won only one match each throughout the 12-game group stage, highlighting the precariousness of their position.

This year, the challenge is expected to be even greater, with Ukraine replacing South Korea in the relegation battle and reportedly possessing a stronger volleyball program. The Thai team's performance has been on a downward trend, having fallen from consistently ranking in the top 8 to struggling at the bottom of the standings in recent seasons.

The absence of their star players for the crucial opening weeks places Thailand in a difficult situation. If they fail to avoid the bottom rank this season, they will be eliminated from the VNL for the first time since its inception in 2017. Meanwhile, Vietnam's national team is reportedly aiming to improve its world ranking to secure a spot in next year's VNL, as the highest-ranked team outside the qualified group replaces the relegated team annually.
