The Philippines, sovereignty and the Pax Silica Industrial Hub – how Helberg sees it

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has strongly defended a proposed US-backed artificial intelligence hub, the Pax Silica Initiative, asserting it will create "quality jobs" and revitalize the nation's economy. The initiative is a cornerstone of a US-led coalition aiming to establish AI supply chains independent of China, covering critical minerals, semiconductors, and logistics.

In his State of the Nation address, Marcos Jr. highlighted the project's potential to enhance industrial competitiveness and inject new life into the economy. The venture is envisioned as an advanced manufacturing and logistics center within the global AI and technology value chain. This commitment was reiterated by US undersecretary of state for economic affairs, Jacob Helberg, who is a key figure in shaping Washington's AI policy and has given assurances regarding the Pax Silica Initiative to the Philippines.

However, the project faces significant opposition. Critics warn that the development could undermine Philippine sovereignty, lead to the displacement of farming communities, and result in environmental harm. These concerns highlight a tension between the government's vision for economic growth and technological advancement through international partnership, and the potential negative impacts on local populations and national autonomy.
