The Rolex Oyster Turns 100 – Why the Watch is Legendary and What Rolex is Launching for the Anniversary

This year marks a centenary for the Rolex Oyster, a timepiece that fundamentally redefined the wristwatch and cemented its place as a legend in horological history. Introduced in 1926, the Oyster was a revolutionary concept in an era when wristwatches were largely considered delicate and imprecise accessories, primarily favored by women, while men opted for the more robust pocket watch.

Hans Wilsdorf, the visionary founder of Rolex, recognized the burgeoning potential of the wristwatch for everyday wear. Despite not being a watchmaker himself, Wilsdorf possessed a keen entrepreneurial spirit and an astute understanding of societal trends. He was convinced that the future lay in a durable and accurate wristwatch, and he relentlessly pursued this vision, collaborating with industry partners like Hermann Aegler in Biel.

Rolex had already demonstrated the precision of its movements early on, achieving chronometer certification in 1910 and later a Class A precision certificate from the Kew Observatory in 1914 – accolades previously reserved for larger marine chronometers. However, the Oyster's true innovation lay in its resilience. Wilsdorf and his team tackled the significant challenge of protecting the delicate watch movement from the harsh realities of daily life: the constant motion, potential impacts, and the ingress of dust, moisture, and sweat, all of which could compromise accuracy and longevity.
