Thessaloniki: Eight-Hour Traffic Block on Thessaloniki-Edessa National Road

A significant portion of the Thessaloniki-Edessa National Road will be inaccessible for eight hours today, May 24, as police implement temporary traffic management measures. The closure, which began at 8:00 AM and will last until 4:00 PM, impacts both directions of the highway.

The affected stretch runs from the Gefyra interchange to the intersection with Kapetan Agra Street in Chalkidona. All vehicle traffic will be completely halted during this period, necessitating detours for both heavy and light vehicles.

Heavy vehicles (over 3.5 tons) heading towards Chalkidona will be rerouted via PATHE, Halastra, Malgara, Kleidi, and Egnatia Odos, then towards Alexandria and onward to Giannitsa or Chalkidona depending on their destination. Vehicles traveling from Giannitsa and Chalkidona toward Thessaloniki will use the provincial road of Giannitson-Alexandrias. Special arrangements are also in place for traffic moving from Veria to Thessaloniki.

Light vehicles (under 3.5 tons) will be diverted through Gefyra, Vathylakkos, Prochoma, and Koufalia, serving both directions toward Chalkidona and Thessaloniki. Some local movements in the Gefyra area will proceed normally for light vehicles. Traffic police urge drivers to exercise caution, follow officers' instructions, and adhere to signage to prevent accidents and traffic congestion.
