Thirteen dead in minivan-trailer crash in southern Peru

Thirteen people died in a collision between a passenger minivan and a trailer in the rural southern Peruvian region of Cusco. The accident happened early Saturday in the Pallpata district, approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Lima.

Initial reports indicated nine fatalities, but the death toll rose to 13. Among the deceased were the minivan's 36-year-old driver, Raúl Huamaní Enríquez, seven women, three men, and two minors. One child died after being taken to a hospital in Espinar.

The minivan had departed from Challhuahuacho in the Apurímac region and was headed for Arequipa. It crashed into the rear of a trailer that had stopped due to apparent mechanical problems. Police have detained the trailer's driver, who claims to have placed safety cones and used a flashlight to warn other vehicles.
