Thomas Müller sets MLS Shooting Challenge record

German football legend Thomas Müller has etched his name in the Major League Soccer record books, setting a new benchmark in the league's Shooting Challenge. The 2014 World Cup winner amassed an impressive 79 points on Tuesday evening, eclipsing the previous record of 72 points achieved by Brazilian player Evander last year, according to the North American league.

The Shooting Challenge, a highlight of the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge, traditionally takes place the night before the main All-Star Game. During this event, selected MLS professionals showcase their shooting accuracy by attempting to hit as many targets as possible within a set time frame, both in and around the goal.

Commentators erupted in praise during Müller's performance, exclaiming, "Thomas Müller, you absolute legend." Evander, after Müller's record-breaking feat, took another turn outside of the official competition but also scored 79 points, prompting Müller to playfully place a crown on the FC Cincinnati player's head.

Müller, who has been playing in Canada since 2025, expressed his enjoyment of the event, stating, "I love the Skills Challenge." The long-time star of Bayern Munich, who also served as an expert commentator for MagentaTV during the World Cup, will participate in the All-Star Game itself. Alongside Müller, U.S. national team captain Tim Ream, Canadian World Cup goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, and Javier Ruiz were among the other notable winners in different categories. The All-Star Game is scheduled for Wednesday evening in North Carolina, where Müller and South Korean player Heung-Min Son will face each other again. Müller's Vancouver Whitecaps are currently tied at the top of the Western Conference standings with 33 points, alongside Los Angeles FC, whom they will face again on Sunday.
