Thousands evacuated in northwest China after heavy rains, flooding

Heavy rains and floods have battered China's northwestern Shaanxi province, leading to widespread infrastructure damage and the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. Roads have collapsed, and bridges and power lines are down, according to public broadcaster CCTV.

In the past 24 hours alone, more than 25,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Rescue efforts are underway, with footage showing relief supplies being transported by foot in Zhen'an County. The broadcaster reported that over 140,000 people have been evacuated from Shaanxi since July 30.

Authorities are warning that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the region. This comes as China prepares for the arrival of Typhoon Dolphin, projected to make landfall between August 9-10 along the eastern coast. The typhoon could bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to areas from Shanghai to Fujian, and potentially even heavier rain to northern China as it interacts with cold air.

Across large parts of the country, including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Shaanxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi, and Hainan, authorities have issued warnings for heavy to torrential rain. Landslides and floods are a significant concern. Meanwhile, high temperatures are forecast for central and eastern regions, with some areas in the Turpan Basin of Xinjiang expected to exceed 42 degrees Celsius (107.6°F).
