Thousands of years old meadow on the seabed threatens the entire Mediterranean

Vast underwater meadows off the coast of Ibiza, often called the 'lungs' of the Mediterranean, are facing an existential threat. These vital ecosystems, primarily composed of *Posidonia oceanica* seagrass, play a crucial role in the health of the entire Mediterranean Sea.

These extensive seagrass meadows are essential for purifying the water, reducing turbidity, and improving clarity. They also act as a natural defense against coastal erosion by stabilizing the seabed. Furthermore, they are significant carbon sinks, absorbing substantial amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby helping to mitigate climate change.

However, these ancient and fragile ecosystems are now in grave danger. Human activities, including anchoring from boats, pollution, and coastal development, have caused significant damage. Compounding these issues, rising sea temperatures due to climate change are further stressing the seagrass, leading to die-offs.
