Three candidates vie for ORF director role

The race for the ORF general director position has narrowed to three key candidates ahead of the June 11 election. Clemens Pig, a former head of the Austria Press Agency (APA), is seen as a favored choice, though he defends against claims of political backing. Pig, who studied political science with a media focus and has a long career in media analysis and management, emphasizes his independence and commitment to reliable information in the face of global tech giants. He has stepped down from his APA role to pursue the position, aiming to prove his impartiality through his appointments.

Markus Breitenecker, a seasoned television executive, also presents a strong profile. He played a significant role in building Austria's largest private broadcaster, ProSiebenSat.1Puls4, since the late 1990s. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, Breitenecker has a deep understanding of the television business and has previously been a vocal critic of ORF. However, he now advocates for cooperation, as seen in his involvement with the streaming platform Joyn. Breitenecker expressed confidence in securing a majority on the ORF's supervisory board.

Lisa Totzauer represents an internal candidate, having previously secured five votes in her bid five years ago. She is positioned as an "insider" who understands the organization's dynamics. Totzauer's candidacy suggests a potential for reform from within the existing structure. The selection process will determine who will lead the Austrian public broadcaster amidst evolving media landscapes and competition.
