Three dead, eight injured in Quito traffic accident

Three people died and eight were injured in a traffic accident in Quito's El Condado sector on July 17, 2026. The Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) reported that the vehicle was traveling on José María Guerrero street, veered off course, and fell to a lower level, landing on Avenida Mariscal Sucre.

Authorities are investigating the incident to determine its cause. Preliminary information suggests the driver may have lost control. One of the deceased is presumed to be the driver, pending confirmation. While social media suggested 11 people were in the vehicle, officials have not confirmed this number.

Of the eight injured, two have been released from medical care. A 16-year-old remains in critical condition with a reserved prognosis, according to their father. The investigation will examine factors such as potential alcohol consumption by occupants and the vehicle's condition. The vehicle, a 2025 model, had no reported issues with its inspection.

The accident caused a temporary closure of Avenida Antonio José de Sucre. Emergency services, including firefighters and forensic teams, worked at the scene for several hours. The investigation aims to confirm the driver, establish contributing factors, and clarify the sequence of events.
