Three injured as new tremors hit Granada in Spain

Spain's southern Granada province was shaken by three additional earthquakes on Tuesday, each registering magnitudes above 4, causing further damage to buildings and disrupting access to key cultural sites. The tremors followed a larger magnitude 5 earthquake on Saturday that had already impacted the historic city of Granada.

Authorities reported that at least three people suffered minor injuries due to the new seismic activity. One of the injured was a child, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) confirmed the magnitudes of the earthquakes, which occurred in quick succession.

Tourist access to the medieval Alhambra complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Spain's most visited attractions, was temporarily restricted as a precautionary measure. The provincial authority of Granada announced the closure of administrative buildings, museums, and sporting facilities, though primary health centers remained operational. Granada's metro system also reduced train speeds as a safety measure.

The largest of Tuesday's tremors, with a magnitude of 4.7, struck at 10:37 a.m. local time near the town of Gojar, approximately 10 kilometers south of Granada city. The IGN noted that surface-level earthquakes like this one are felt more intensely and can cause more localized damage than deeper tremors of similar strength. The Gojar earthquake was followed by slightly weaker tremors in nearby towns on the city's southern outskirts.
