Three killed in southern Lebanon as violence flares

Israel has confirmed the deaths of two reservists in southern Lebanon, marking the first Israeli military fatalities in the region in over a month. Major Harel Birenstock, 34, and Sergeant Major Tamir Vaknin, 33, were killed in combat, the military announced.

The fatalities came as Israel conducted fresh strikes in southern Lebanon, accompanied by an evacuation warning for the town of Mansouri. The military stated these were "precise strikes" in response to "blatant violation of the ceasefire by the Hezbollah terrorist organisation."

Beirut is seeking a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.

Negotiations in Rome, the seventh round since Hezbollah's rocket fire in March, are expected to resume. A previous framework deal in June involved Hezbollah's disarmament, Israeli withdrawal, and the deployment of the Lebanese army. The UN's humanitarian agency noted that over 800,000 displaced people had begun returning home following a recent lull in violence, though more than 360,000 remain displaced.
