Thuringia opts out of gifted student project, cites costs

Thuringia will not join a project called "Digital Drehtür," which aims to support highly gifted students by allowing them to attend digital classes tailored to their abilities. The state's Ministry of Education cited financial and technical reasons for its non-participation. Instead, Thuringia plans to focus on establishing its own "Thuringian School Cloud" as a central hub for digital learning resources.

The "Digital Drehtür" project, initiated in the early 2020s, is a collaborative educational effort involving 12 of Germany's 16 federal states. These participating states contribute to the project's funding and actively help implement its offerings. The initiative aims to continue beyond 2027 and become a permanent fixture in the German education system, with plans to eventually secure full funding from the participating states. The project also seeks to encourage the remaining four states, including Bavaria and Thuringia, to join and solidify its nationwide presence.

Thuringia's decision to abstain from the "Digital Drehtür" project was detailed in a response to a query from BSW state parliament member Dirk Hoffmeister. The Ministry of Education explained that joining the project would require additional personnel and resources, which are currently dedicated to developing and maintaining the state's own school cloud. The ministry has not ruled out future participation, stating that the reasons for not joining in the past would need to be re-evaluated.
