Tibet hit by 5.0 magnitude earthquake; flood alert issued for dam

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattled Tibet on Thursday, near the border with Nepal, prompting authorities to issue a level 5 flood alert. The seismic activity occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in the northern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The primary concern following the earthquake is the potential overflow of a dam lake. China's Ministry of Water Resources has instructed local officials to closely monitor the dam and rainfall levels. This alert comes as the region grapples with the aftermath of a recent landslide and significant flooding in neighboring Nepal.

Nepal has been severely impacted by glacial lake outburst floods in the Himalayas. A recent flood, triggered by a detached glacier, reached the Bhotekoshi River, resulting in at least 389 confirmed deaths and 910 people reported missing, according to Nepal Police and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

The earthquake's proximity to the dam raises concerns about its structural integrity and the potential for further disaster. The combined threats of seismic activity and potential flooding create a precarious situation for the region, which is already dealing with the consequences of natural disasters.
