Tien Stops Mérida in Canada Masters Quarterfinals; Jódar Advances

American teenager Learner Tien has advanced to the semifinals of the Canada Masters 1000, defeating Spain's Daniel Mérida in a decisive quarterfinal match. Tien, currently ranked world No. 19, secured a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mérida in just one hour and twelve minutes.

The match, considered the most significant of Mérida's career to date, saw the Spanish player break Tien's serve in the opening game. However, Tien quickly regained control, leveling the set and then breaking Mérida's serve again to clinch the first set 6-3.

Tien continued his dominant performance in the second set, securing an early break. Although Mérida managed to save three break points in the third game, Tien ultimately broke his opponent's serve again to close out the match. Mérida's strong performance throughout the tournament, however, will see him enter the ATP Top 50 for the first time, achieving a new career-high ranking of world No. 40.

Tien is set to face fellow American Ben Shelton in the semifinals. The other semifinal match will feature Spain's Rafa Jódar against another American, Brandon Nakashima, for a spot in the final. Mérida leaves Montreal with four hard-court victories, a surface on which he had previously not won a professional match.
