Tinubu celebrates Team Nigeria’s 24-medal haul at 2026 Commonwealth Games

President Bola Tinubu has lauded Team Nigeria's performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the contingent secured 24 medals. The President congratulated the athletes on their achievement, which included 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals, and pledged his administration's commitment to continued investment in sports development.

Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the medal haul as a testament to the athletes' resilience, discipline, and determination. He expressed profound appreciation to all involved, including athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators, for representing the nation with honor and pride. The President also commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their dedication to sports development and athlete support.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration's steadfast resolve to invest in the sports sector. This includes strengthening sporting institutions, improving training facilities, and creating more opportunities for Nigerian athletes to excel globally. He noted that the experience gained in Glasgow would serve as a crucial springboard for future international competitions and inspire young Nigerians toward excellence and national service.

Team Nigeria's 24 medals at the Glasgow 2026 Games matched their tally from the 2018 Gold Coast Games. However, it fell short of the 35 medals won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the 36 medals secured at the 2014 edition, also held in Glasgow.
