Tinubu hails 'rescue' of 308 abducted victims from Kwara and Niger

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the successful rescue of 308 people who had been abducted from various communities in Kwara and Niger states. The announcement came via a statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, describing the operation as a significant breakthrough in the nation's fight against kidnapping and terrorism.

The rescued individuals include 163 residents from Woro, a community in Kwara State bordering the Kainji Lake National Park, and 145 others taken from villages in neighboring Niger State. While community members reported 176 abductions from Woro, a list compiled by families identified 167 victims, comprising 58 males and 109 females aged one to 50. The Kwara State Government has confirmed the release of the Woro abductees, though the Niger State government has not yet issued a public statement.

The captives were freed from the Kainji Lake National Park during a coordinated, intelligence-led operation. This mission involved the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force. The presidency hailed the operation as the largest single-day rescue ever conducted by the joint security team.

President Tinubu commended the security agencies for their bravery, professionalism, and effective inter-agency collaboration. "The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services," he stated, adding, "I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives." The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at a facility in Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, before being formally handed over to their respective states.
