Tinubu: LGAs Are Strategic to Nigeria’s Governance Architecture, Closest to People

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has underscored the critical role of local government councils, describing them as the most accessible tier of government for Nigerian citizens. Speaking at a workshop for local government chairmen in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stressed that the actions and decisions at this level directly impact people's daily lives.

He urged the council bosses to champion inclusive and representative governance, ensuring fairness in appointments, transparency in administration, and balance in resource distribution. This approach, he stated, is vital for strengthening public confidence and reinforcing national unity. The president emphasized that Nigeria's diversity, encompassing multiple cultures and ethnicities, is a significant asset that requires careful management through fairness, justice, and inclusiveness.

Tinubu referenced the constitutional provision of the Federal Character principle, noting its role in ensuring government reflects the nation's diversity. He argued that adhering to this principle is fundamental for fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty among Nigerians, which is crucial for the country's stability and progress. The president commended the Federal Character Commission for recognizing the importance of local governments in implementing these principles.
