Toledo's wife renews pardon plea, announces mother's death amid legal battles

Eliane Karp, wife of former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, has again requested a humanitarian pardon for her husband, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for illegal campaign contributions linked to the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht. Speaking from Tel Aviv, Karp appealed to Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori to grant the pardon, emphasizing reconciliation over hatred.

Toledo, 80, is imprisoned in the Barbadillo prison in Lima, alongside other former presidents. Karp stated that a pardon would not halt Toledo's defense in other ongoing legal cases. She expressed deep personal anguish, urging Fujimori to consider her own past experiences with the justice system and grant her husband relief from what she described as unjust suffering.

Karp herself faces an international arrest warrant and preventive detention in the Ecoteva case, which involves real estate purchases made through a company linked to her mother and a proxy, allegedly using Odebrecht funds. She revealed that her 99-year-old mother, Eva Fernenbug, passed away in a Brussels nursing home. Karp was unable to visit her mother due to the active arrest warrants against her, adding another layer of personal tragedy to her legal battles.

She lamented the prolonged judicial processes in her own case, which she believes prevent her from mounting an adequate defense. The death of her mother, just shy of her 100th birthday, has intensified her distress. Toledo's wife highlighted his reported health issues, attributing them partly to the stress and anxiety stemming from his legal predicaments.
