Tomohisa Yamashita Says “Thank You, Kaohsiung” Ahead of Concert, Drawing Reply From Mayor Chen

Tomohisa Yamashita is set to perform in Kaohsiung this November, but before the concert he gave the city another reason to celebrate: a surprise English message thanking it for helping Kumamoto after the earthquake.

Yamashita said he was deeply moved by Kaohsiung's selfless assistance to the Japanese city. He also wrote that he felt fortunate to have the chance to perform in Kaohsiung and promised to give his all on stage, hoping music could bring people joy and strength.

The post quickly drew attention online and prompted Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai to respond in English. Chen said Kaohsiung and Kumamoto shared a deep friendship, making mutual support natural. He also offered Yamashita a warm welcome on behalf of Kaohsiung residents and invited him to enjoy the city's food and hospitality.

Kumamoto was struck by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in late July. The Taiwan government and public responded with assistance, and donations reportedly passed NT$300 million. Kaohsiung, which has a friendship-city relationship with Kumamoto, also set up a dedicated account to coordinate contributions.
