Toni Kukoč and Wife Renata Enjoy Split, Their Love Story Since High School

Legendary basketball player Toni Kukoč and his wife Renata recently spent time in their beloved hometown of Split, Croatia, drawing attention during a public appearance at the 30th anniversary of the Plazma Sports Games of Youth. Despite decades living in the United States, the couple consistently prioritizes returning to Split during the summer months.

Their relationship story began in the 1980s within the halls of the Chemical Technology School in Split. While Toni's height and talent were already noticeable, winning Renata's heart was not an immediate affair. In a documentary about his Hall of Fame induction, Renata recalled their high school days, humorously noting Toni's playful complaints about her initial lack of interest in basketball, contrasting with her friends who followed him. The spark between them truly ignited later, around age 19, initiating a relationship that has proven resilient.

Renata served as Toni's anchor throughout his successful career with the legendary Jugoplastika team and later in the NBA. He once joked in an interview that he often played exceptionally well immediately after an argument with Renata, playfully attributing his success to their dynamic. Their marriage in May 1992 occurred during the Croatian War of Independence, a modest ceremony attended by close family. Renata later revealed the wedding took place while she was heavily pregnant, and Toni danced all night with a high fever, later diagnosed with pneumonia, symbolizing the start of their life together marked by love and unforeseen obstacles.

In 1993, with their two-month-old son Marin, the couple moved to Chicago when Toni signed with the Bulls. Initially, America's fast-paced lifestyle felt foreign to Toni, who doubted his ability to adapt. However, their life there unfolded differently than anticipated, proving their ability to build a lasting life together across continents.
