Tornado likely caused millions in damage in Hesse, mayor estimates

The recent tornado that swept through Solms, Germany, is estimated to have caused millions of euros in damage, Mayor Katharina Didlapp stated. She reported that nearly every house on the affected streets sustained damage, with some structural issues only becoming apparent in the days following the storm. In Solms, approximately a dozen homes were impacted, while in the Wetzlar district of Münchholzhausen, around 60 houses were damaged. Three homes in Solms experienced particularly severe destruction; one lost its entire roof, another had its roof lifted and tiles scattered, and a third, fortunately unoccupied, house saw its roof collapse inward.

Despite the significant destruction, Mayor Didlapp expressed relief that no one was injured during the event. The nine residents of one heavily damaged house have been placed in emergency accommodation, while another resident is staying with family. The mayor highlighted the remarkable solidarity among Solms residents, noting a collection for the affected family and neighbors signaling their willingness to offer shelter during the storm. Tradespeople also responded quickly, covering damaged roofs with tarps overnight to secure them. The extent to which insurance will cover the damages remains unclear.
