Traffic agent shot dead in Córdoba, Veracruz, in patrol car delivered hours earlier

A traffic agent in Córdoba, Veracruz, was fatally shot on July 9, 2026, while on duty inside a patrol vehicle. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Avenida 4 in the city's downtown area.

Emergency services responded to the scene but found the officer had already succumbed to his injuries. The patrol car in which the agent was killed was among nine new units recently delivered to the municipal police and traffic departments by Mayor Manuel Alonso Cerezo. The vehicles were presented earlier that day as part of efforts to strengthen the city's fleet.

Following the shooting, municipal police, the Secretariat of Public Security, the National Guard, and the Ministerial Police initiated a large-scale operation to apprehend those responsible. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made.

The attack has cast a shadow over the recent reinforcement of the city's security infrastructure, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
