Trafficked women in Taiwan face prostitution, abuse, and death

A disturbing trend of Southeast Asian women being trafficked to Taiwan, deceived with false promises of employment, has come to light. These women are then forced into prostitution and subjected to severe abuse by criminal organizations. The situation has escalated, with a doubling of victim numbers in recent years and tragic cases of women dying in Taiwan due to lack of timely medical care.

Trafficking rings exploit social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook to recruit vulnerable women from countries including Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. They offer lucrative "package deals" covering airfare, accommodation, and high-paying jobs in hostess bars or even simple cleaning roles. Enticed by salaries significantly higher than those in their home countries, many young women fall prey to these scams.

Upon arrival in Taiwan, the women's circumstances drastically change. Their recruiters immediately force them into sex work to pay off inflated travel and living expenses, effectively creating debt bondage. Victims are compelled to see five to ten clients daily, leading to frequent vaginal inflammation. Their inability to access medical treatment exacerbates their suffering, causing profound physical and psychological trauma.

To prevent such cases, we have strengthened risk screening mechanisms at the border and are cooperating with police and other domestic agencies for investigations.

Recent investigations have uncovered harrowing cases. One Indonesian woman died after her request for rest due to illness was denied. In another case, nine women from Myanmar were forced into prostitution across various cities. Those who refused faced physical violence. The trafficking groups employ brutal tactics, including restricting movement, threatening victims with nude photos, and sending videos of assaulted individuals to their families, warning that their relatives will face danger if they do not comply.

Taiwan's Immigration Agency acknowledges the severity of the issue and states it is enhancing risk screening at borders and collaborating with police and labor authorities for domestic investigations. They are also conducting public awareness campaigns to alert foreign nationals. The agency urges the public to report any suspected human trafficking activities immediately.
