Tragedy in Guinea: Garbage Mountain Collapses on People, Dozens Feared Dead

A catastrophic landslide occurred at the Dar Es Salam landfill in Conakry, Guinea, early Sunday morning when a mountain of garbage collapsed, burying people. The incident, attributed to heavy rains overnight, has resulted in numerous casualties, with authorities confirming dozens of victims.

Despite previous eviction orders for residents living near the hazardous landfill, many individuals were still present at the site when the disaster struck. Rescue operations are currently in progress as emergency services work to find survivors amidst the debris. Djenabou Toure, the minister of territorial administration and decentralization, stated at the scene, "We will ensure that the remaining families are relocated elsewhere."

This is not the first time Conakry has experienced such a tragedy. A similar incident occurred in 2017 when a garbage slide claimed several lives. The recurring nature of these disasters highlights the ongoing challenges associated with waste management and informal settlements in the Guinean capital.
