Tragedy in Malia: Woman drowns trying to save friend in front of three children

A tragic incident occurred in Malia, Crete, on Wednesday afternoon when a Dutch tourist, approximately 40 years old, drowned while attempting to save a friend who was in distress while swimming.

The two women had rented a small speedboat from Hersonissos for a summer outing. Onboard with them were three minors: two children under five years old and one approximately 15 years old. According to local reports, one of the women decided to go for a swim and soon after began experiencing difficulty staying afloat.

Seeing her friend in danger, the other woman immediately jumped into the water to help. However, the rescue attempt turned into a tragedy. While the woman who initially got into trouble managed to survive, her friend, in her effort to keep her safe, became exhausted and lost consciousness.

The harrowing event unfolded before the three children who remained on the boat and began calling for help. Their cries alerted nearby individuals, and jet ski operators from neighboring water sports businesses quickly responded. The unconscious woman was pulled from the water and brought to shore, where rescuers from EKAV (National Center for Emergency Care) attempted to revive her. Sadly, despite their immediate efforts, she was pronounced dead.
