Trained elephants help relocate wild 'Mek Jeram' in Malaysia

A wild elephant, nicknamed 'Mek Jeram,' has been safely relocated from Kampung Jeram, Manir, in Terengganu, Malaysia, to the Royal Belum State Park in Perak. The successful operation relied on the assistance of two trained decoy elephants, Indah and Suria, known for their ability to 'persuade' wild elephants.

The relocation process began around 8 AM and proceeded smoothly. Indah and Suria managed to coax Mek Jeram within approximately 15 minutes, after which the female elephant was guided to a transport truck. By 10:30 AM, Mek Jeram was safely loaded onto the truck for its journey to Perak.

The operation to move the elephant began at 8 this morning with 12 staff from Perhilitan Terengganu, seven staff from the Sungai Deka Elephant Conservation Center, and two staff from the National Elephant Conservation Center Kuala Gandah, Pahang.

According to Dennis Ten Choon Yung, Director of the Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), the elephant was captured last Saturday after being spotted wandering in the village and damaging crops. The operation involved 12 Perhilitan staff from Terengganu, seven from the Sungai Deka Elephant Conservation Center, and two from the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Center in Pahang. The elephant is reported to be in a safe and stable condition.
