Trakošćan Castle's 'poison wallpaper' project shortlisted for international award

The Trakošćan Castle's innovative project, "Les Fleurs du mal of the Trakošćan Castle - Small Library," has earned a spot in the final selection for the international Heritage in Motion 2026 award in the Museums in Short category. The project centers on the castle's Small Library and its exceptionally valuable 19th-century "poison wallpapers."

These rare wallpapers, preserved in situ within their original historical setting, represent one of the few surviving examples of Central European "poison" wallpapers. The castle notes the extreme fragility of the wallpapers and the complex conservation and interpretation challenges they pose. The primary goal is to make this rare heritage accessible to visitors while simultaneously protecting it from further physical intervention and potential damage.

To address this challenge, the castle developed a site-specific digital film. This film uses visual storytelling to symbolically reveal the history of the wallpapers, their intricate material structure, manufacturing techniques, and the process of their restoration and protection. A significant part of the film is dedicated to the original wool dust, or fibers, used to create the wallpapers' distinctive velvety texture. This dust was removed during restoration, preserved, and then reapplied to the walls.

The project successfully integrates conservation, research, and contemporary museum interpretation. It aims to create an immersive experience for visitors, allowing them to engage with one of Trakošćan Castle's most delicate heritage stories. The castle emphasizes the importance of connecting visitors with the unique history and conservation efforts surrounding these remarkable wallpapers.
