Tram collision in Germany injures 30, three critically

A collision between two trams in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, resulted in injuries to as many as 30 people on Thursday, with three passengers in critical condition. The incident occurred in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

Local media reported that three of the injured are in severe condition, with doctors not ruling out the possibility of fatalities. An additional seven passengers suffered serious injuries. The accident took place in the city center, near the Veltins Arena stadium on Kurt Schumacher Street.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that a tram used for driver training stopped abruptly on the tracks or moved at an extremely low speed. A second, fully occupied tram following behind collided with the training vehicle. A police spokesperson confirmed that the driver of the second tram was unable to stop in time.

Emergency services, including firefighters and numerous ambulances, arrived at the scene to provide aid and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. A specialized accident investigation team has been deployed to gather evidence. Tram traffic in the area was completely suspended, and the vicinity remained cordoned off by police for several hours.
